Stamped concrete

Stamped and decorative concrete that holds its color through an Idaho winter

Stamped concrete looks like stone for a fraction of the price. In Meridian it lasts if the mix has air in it, the release and sealer are right for the climate, and nobody puts magnesium chloride on it.

Finished stamped concrete patio in an ashlar slate pattern with warm tan color and a dark border behind a Treasure Valley home, late afternoon light

Stamped concrete is ordinary concrete, colored and pressed with textured mats while it's still plastic, so the surface looks like slate, flagstone, cobblestone, brick or wood plank. The patterns we pour most in Meridian are ashlar slate and random flagstone for patios, cobble or brick for borders and walkway edges, and wood plank around fire pits. Color goes in two layers: integral color mixed into the whole load, so a chip shows color rather than gray, and a release color that settles into the texture to give it depth. A border in a contrasting color or a plain troweled band frames the field.

The climate is what makes decorative concrete here different from what you see in Arizona. Stamping works the surface more than a broom finish, and a surface that is overworked, finished with bleed water on top, or poured without enough entrained air is the one that scales in its first few winters. So the mix is the same air-entrained, roughly 4,000 psi concrete we use for driveways, and the stamping happens at the right moment, not early. Sealer matters more than people expect. A glossy film-forming sealer looks great the first summer, but in a place with about 92 freeze-thaw days a year it can trap moisture, turn white and get slippery. For most stamped work here we use a breathable sealer, and a non-slip additive where people walk wet. Plan on resealing every two to three years.

Stamped concrete is an upgrade, so it is also the finish an HOA is most likely to want to see first. We bring color charts and photos of the pattern to the estimate, and we send the architectural committee what it asks for. If the work is in the right-of-way, ACHD code makes decorative concrete there the owner's to repair, so we usually keep the stamping on your side of the sidewalk.

Questions we get about stamped concrete

Does stamped concrete hold up to Idaho winters?

Yes, if the concrete is air-entrained, it isn't overworked, the sealer breathes, and it never sees magnesium chloride. Most stamped concrete that fails here was missing one of those.

How often does it need sealing?

Every two to three years for most patios, sooner on a south-facing slab that bakes all summer. Resealing is a cleaning and one or two coats, not a big job.

Is it slippery?

A glossy sealer can be when wet or icy. We add a non-slip grit to the sealer on walks and steps, or use a breathable penetrating sealer that leaves the texture.

Can you stamp a driveway?

Yes, though most people stamp a border or the walkway and leave the drive in broom for grip and lower cost. Car tires and deicer are hard on decorative sealer.

Will it crack?

All concrete cracks. We put the joints inside the pattern's grout lines so the cracks we control are hard to see.

Ready to pour something that lasts?

Free on-site measurement, a written price good for 30 days, air-entrained concrete for 108 freezing nights a year, a compacted base over the hardpan, and the ACHD permit when the work reaches the street.
