Concrete in Caldwell, as the city moves its driveways off gravel
Caldwell has drafted code changes that would require established driveways to be concrete or asphalt, not gravel or lawn. Plenty of owners are paving ahead of it.
Caldwell, the Canyon County seat with about 83,000 people, has an older core around downtown and Indian Creek, the College of Idaho neighborhood, and fast-growing subdivisions on its edges. In 2025 the city drafted amendments to its zoning standards that would require established driveways to be concrete or asphalt and not gravel, lawn or sod, and would call for Portland cement concrete parking surfaces six inches thick on a four-inch compacted aggregate base. It was a draft when we checked, and we confirm the current rule for your address before quoting. Either way, it reflects where the city is heading, and a lot of Caldwell's gravel driveways and parking strips are being paved.
Six inches on four inches of compacted aggregate is a sound standard regardless, and it's what we'd recommend for any pad carrying a truck or a trailer. Caldwell's most common soil in the survey is Power silt loam, which is deep with no hardpan, so footing digs are usually straightforward. Being in Canyon County, Caldwell's street right-of-way is permitted by the city rather than ACHD. We also do plenty of ordinary work here: replacing older driveways and walks, building patios and RV pads, and pouring shop slabs on the larger lots outside the center.

Questions from Caldwell homeowners
Does Caldwell require concrete driveways now?
The city drafted that change in 2025. We check the current status for your property before we quote. Paving a gravel driveway is a good investment either way.
How thick should a parking pad be?
Six inches on four inches of compacted aggregate is what Caldwell's draft standard calls for, and what we'd recommend for trucks and trailers anyway.
Who permits the approach in Caldwell?
The city, for city streets. ACHD's jurisdiction ends at the Ada County line.
What does it cost to pave a gravel driveway?
Most run $8 to $12 per square foot for a standard four-inch driveway, or more for a six-inch section. Removing the gravel and regrading is usually less than tearing out old concrete.
